Background Check FAQ
Can we change the authorization form?
- No. The wording is required by Protect My Ministry and is designed to comply with federal laws, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Why does it say 'employee' instead of 'volunteer'?
- Federal guidance requires nonprofits to follow the same background check rules for volunteers as employees.
Will Crosspoint run background checks anytime?
- No. We only run a background check when you authorize it. Volunteers are typically rescreened every five years with a new authorization.
What is included in the background check?
- Only a multi-state criminal search, Social Security trace, and multi-state sex offender registry search.
Who sees my personal information?
- Your personal information goes directly to Protect My Ministry. Crosspoint does not receive or store it. Only designated leaders review reports when necessary.
Who reviews adverse results?
- Only the Campus Pastor and Executive Pastor of Ministries review and determine appropriate next steps.
What happens if there is an adverse result?
- The church follows all FCRA requirements, including notifying the individual and allowing time to dispute the report before a final decision.
Can I learn more about Protect My Ministry?
- Yes. Visit www.protectmyministry.com for privacy information and FAQs.
What if someone refuses a background check?
- A ministry leader or Campus Pastor will answer questions. If the individual still declines, they cannot serve.
When must current volunteers complete it?
- Complete the background check and required training by the church's stated deadline to continue serving.
Can someone shadow before completing it?
- Yes. They may shadow under supervision but cannot serve independently or count toward the two-adult rule.
Do new volunteers have a grace period?
- No. New volunteers must complete the process before serving.
